Pea Gravel Stable Q&A

Pea Gravel Stable Q&A

Hello Sarah

Your site is fantastic! I have recently gone barefoot with my highland x TB after lameness problems with shoes. He’s fine barefoot although we are still going through the transition process. I can only turn out on grass and have a conventional stable so I’m adding a 4ft x 12 ft strip of pea gravel in my stable so he can stand on it when looking out of the door and drinking. How smooth should the pea gravel be? I have yet to find any that doesn’t have some crushed up bits in it, some of which don’t have particularly smooth edges although I wouldn’t necessarily call them sharp. Should it be more like pebbles or do you think some smaller broken bits in amongst it would be ok? I do have a barefoot trimmer but I ask her so many questions all the time I thought I’d approach you!
Thanks for your time.

Liz

Dear Liz,

Don’t worry to much about the grass, although we have had a track here it has also had its challenges. There is still a lot of good in grass. It is just a matter of watching and seeing how their feet develop and then being careful in the heavy grass growth periods. I will be writing up more pages on grazing shortly on this issue.

Your idea about pea gravel in you stable is an excellent idea. The pea gravel you are describing sounds absolutely fine, small broken bits in amongst the gravel will be fine.
There is often going to be compromises one has to make but the closer you get to natural horsecare the easier everything becomes.

Good luck!
